9 1/4" high-carbon steel blade, wood handle, and fine leather sheath with a belt frog.
In 1827 James Bowie was serving as the observer at a duel near Natchez, Mississippi, when he was attacked and forced to defend himself with his hunting knife. His victory despite grave wounds caused a sensation that resulted in a huge demand for "Bowie" knives. The Vicksburg Bowie Knife has a very early style blade with the Spanish notch and a handle called a "dogbone" due to its pommel shape. This style was often carried by the men who worked the rivers on keelboats and steamboats.

In 1827 James Bowie was serving as the observer at a duel near Natchez, Mississippi, when he was attacked and forced to defend himself with his hunting knife. His victory despite grave wounds caused a sensation that resulted in a huge demand for "Bowie" knives. This knife is a replica of one made in the New Orleans French Quarter by a cutler named Pradel. This Bowie knife was designed to be handy while worn in confined quarters such as sitting at a faro table or a poker game on a river boat. A knife like this would come to hand very quickly.
